About us

A publication about how long clothes and shoes last, with prices and compositions recorded every month from the brands' own websites.

What we do

Mode Durable compares fashion and footwear brands on what decides how long a piece lasts (the material, the construction, the care it needs, the repair or take-back services on offer). Every article gives the date the data was recorded and the scope compared, with the scoring grid at the foot of the page.

Seasonal trends fall outside our remit. Our subjects are the pair that gets through three winters, the sweatshirt that still looks clean after ten washes and the commitments a brand can back with evidence.

Our writers

Our articles are written by Julien Marchand, fashion and footwear journalist, and Léa Fontaine, textile engineer. A second member of the team reads every piece before publication, and articles are updated as soon as a price or a range changes.

How we score

Each brand gets five scores out of 10. Four cover durability, materials, price set against lifespan and verifiable commitments, and the fifth is a weighted average. The grid, identical from one article to the next, is published at the foot of the page with the sources used.
