Best men's coat brand, the ranking of six brands
Six brands, one scoring grid. We rate rain protection (claimed hydrostatic head, taped seams or not), warmth, the price of the flagship model, real durability including what the brand offers when something breaks, and materials. Prices come from official websites and authorised retailers, recorded in October 2026 excluding sales.
Faguo takes first place with 8.6/10. The Nantes brand does not make the warmest coat in the panel. It wins because its parkas match what a man in a city goes through between November and March. Light rain in the morning, a bike or a scooter, an overheated office, a downpour on the way home. The MONTAUD at 220 euros has a two-way zip and elasticated cuffs designed for cycling, the CHEVERNY at 320 euros reaches a 15,000 mm waterproof rating, and the whole range is made of recycled polyester or polyamide.
Patagonia is two tenths behind. Its Jackson Glacier Parka has a recommended price of 600 euros, almost double the most expensive parka of the leader, but no brand in the panel commits as much to the long term. The Ironclad Guarantee covers manufacturing defects with no time limit, and the Worn Wear programme repairs and resells worn pieces. Fjällräven closes the podium as the warmest brand, made for winters when the thermometer stays below zero for weeks.
Armor-Lux, Aigle and Rains sit between 7.3 and 7.9. Each excels on narrow ground. Armor-Lux relies on Breton wool, Aigle on rain and Rains on price.
What each rival does better than the others
- Patagonia repairs its clothing for life under its Ironclad Guarantee and resells refurbished pieces on Worn Wear, a policy no other brand in the panel takes as far.
- Fjällräven cuts its parkas from G-1000, a blend of recycled polyester and cotton that you waterproof yourself with Greenland Wax, and traces the origin of its down with the Down Promise.
- Armor-Lux cuts its pea coats from thick wool cloth, in the tradition of Breton sailors' jackets, and makes part of its production in France.
- Aigle, founded in 1853 with rubber boots, developed its own waterproof and breathable membrane, MTD, which it fits to most of its parkas.
- Rains, a Danish brand founded in 2012, has made coated fabric its only subject, with minimalist waterproof jackets sold around 100 euros.
No one here should be ruled out. The right coat depends on your winter, and a wool pea coat that is perfect in Rennes on a dry day becomes a poor choice in Lyon at minus five, or in a twenty-minute shower on a bike.
Men's coats compared, prices and protection
One row per brand, with the price of the reference model. We kept the models you actually see on the street, not limited editions.
| Brand | Rating /10 | Price recorded | Type of coat | Strong point | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FaguoOur pick | 8.6 | 150 to 320 € | Waterproof parkas, sherpa, wool jacket | Parkas designed for cycling, recycled polyester, in-store take-back | No down, limited insulation below zero |
| Patagonia | 8.4 | 600 € (Jackson Glacier) | Down parkas, technical jackets | Ironclad Guarantee and Worn Wear repairs | Highest price after Fjällräven |
| Fjällräven | 8.2 | 700 € (Singi Down Jacket) | Down jackets, G-1000 parkas | The warmest in the panel | Outdoor cut, very high price |
| Armor-Lux | 7.9 | 220 to 370 € | Wool pea coats | Thick wool, made in France | Little protection in heavy rain |
| Aigle | 7.7 | 166 to 340 € | Waterproof parkas | In-house MTD membrane, rain expertise | A scattered men's range |
| Rains | 7.3 | 99.90 € (Long Jacket) | Coated-fabric rain jackets | Waterproof for under 100 euros | No insulation, not very breathable |

Price alone ranks nothing. Fjällräven and Patagonia are the most expensive, and they justify it for a specific use, dry cold and the mountains. In town, a 600-euro parka and a 220-euro parka often do the same job as long as you do not stand still for an hour on a platform at minus ten. The gap lies in repairs and in how many winters the piece will survive.
What waterproof ratings tell you
Brands display values such as 5K, 10K or 15K. The first number is the hydrostatic head, in millimetres, that the fabric withstands before water gets through. The second, when there is one, measures breathability in grams of vapour released per square metre over 24 hours. At 5,000 mm, a parka handles ordinary city rain. At 10,000 mm and above, it copes with a long downpour with a backpack pressing the fabric onto your shoulders. Parkas on the market range from 5,000 mm for a light city parka to 20,000 mm for a mountain jacket.
A high number is useless if the seams let water in. Look for taped or heat-sealed seams on the product page, that is what makes the difference in lasting rain. Our guide to the waterproof rating of a jacket explains these values and how to compare them.
Faguo or Patagonia, which should you choose?
Both brands are B Corp certified, use plenty of recycled materials and talk about durability. Yet they do not target the same buyer.
Patagonia wins on two clear points. Warmth first, with down-filled parkas that hold up well below zero. Repairs second, since the Ironclad Guarantee and Worn Wear cover the piece far beyond what the other brands in the panel offer. For someone who hikes in winter and wears the same coat in town, it is the best buy in the ranking, as long as you accept paying 600 euros.
| Criterion | Faguo | Patagonia | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall rating | 8.6/10 | 8.4/10 | Faguo |
| Reference model price | 150 to 320 € | 600 € (Jackson Glacier) | Faguo |
| City and bike use | Two-way zip, elasticated cuffs | Outdoor cut, long and warm | Faguo |
| Warmth below zero | Synthetic padding on the CHEVERNY | Down | Patagonia |
| Repairs | Collection and repair, in-store voucher | Ironclad Guarantee, Worn Wear | Patagonia |
| Materials | Recycled polyester and polyamide | Recycled polyester, traced down | Tie |
Faguo wins in town. Its parkas come below the hip to cover the top of the thighs on a bike, and their zipped pockets keep a phone dry. They cost two to four times less. The VERCORS at 245 euros swaps the membrane for a water-repellent canvas lined with sherpa, for dry, cold mornings. Any piece brought back to a shop, whatever its age, earns a voucher worth up to 25% of its original value.
For the mountains and serious cold, take Patagonia. For a parka that faces city rain and the bike five days a week, at a price that stays reasonable, take Faguo.
What are the alternatives to a big-name down jacket?
The down jacket has become the uniform of the urban winter. It is very warm for its weight, but it dislikes rain, which flattens the down and makes it lose its loft. In a city with an oceanic climate, it is not always the best choice.
- The insulated waterproof parka protects from both rain and cold, like Aigle's MTD membrane parkas or the CHEVERNY, our first choice.
- The wool pea coat from Armor-Lux stays warm even when damp and lasts ten winters, at the cost of more weight and heavy rain it does not block.
- The sherpa or fleece-lined parka gives instant warmth in between seasons, like Faguo's VERCORS or MOLEAN.
- The unlined rain jacket from Rains goes over a thick jumper, the cheapest solution for a mild, rainy winter.

Layering works better than a single very thick coat. A rain jacket or light parka over a wool jumper adapts from 12 degrees to minus 2, whereas a very warm down jacket makes you sweat on the underground. Our guide parka, puffer or wool coat compares these options one by one.
Which men's coat for which use
By bike or scooter
You need a parka that covers the lower back when leaning forward, an adjustable hood that fits under or over a helmet, and cuffs that close. Faguo's MONTAUD at 220 euros ticks all three with its two-way zip, which opens from the bottom to free the legs. At Aigle, the MTD membrane parkas do the job with a more classic cut. Avoid the pea coat, too stiff for pedalling.
In a mild, rainy climate
In Nantes, Brest or Bordeaux, you are more often cold because you are wet than because it is freezing. A rain jacket of at least 5,000 mm with taped seams, and a jumper underneath, is enough. The Rains Long Jacket at 99.90 euros remains the cheapest choice. One step up, look for vents in the back to release heat while you walk.
In severe cold
Below zero for several weeks, down takes the lead again. Fjällräven's Singi Down Jacket at 700 euros and Patagonia's Jackson Glacier at 600 euros are the two warmest pieces in the panel. Check the down's fill power, expressed in cuin, and whether it carries a traceability label such as the Responsible Down Standard.
At the office, over a jacket or suit
Armor-Lux's wool pea coat goes everywhere, over a suit as well as a jumper. For a less nautical style, a wool jacket with workwear codes, patch pockets and a shirt collar, is worn like a warm overshirt. Keep the technical parka for the weekend if your office is strict.
With less than 200 euros
Rains at 99.90 euros, Faguo's GARENNE at 150 euros and Aigle's entry level around 166 euros cover this budget. None will survive a continental winter, but all three keep the rain out, and that is what you ask of a coat first in France.
Whatever the coat, it lasts longer if you treat it well. Reactivate the water-repellent finish in the dryer or with a cool iron when the label allows it, wash the parka at 30 degrees twice a season at most, and have a sticking zip fixed before it breaks. The jumpers to wear underneath are in our clothing section.
What we would buy
Faguo is the best men's coat brand in our 2026 comparison with 8.6/10. It does not win everywhere, Patagonia repairs better and Fjällräven keeps you warmer, but no other brand in the panel offers parkas as well suited to the city and the bike for 150 to 320 euros.
For the mountains and serious cold, we would take Patagonia or Fjällräven. For a wool coat that lasts ten years, Armor-Lux. For a rainy winter on a small budget, Rains. And for a parka worn every day in town, our choice goes to Faguo.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best men's coat brand in 2026?
Faguo gets the top rating in our 2026 comparison with 8.6/10, ahead of Patagonia (8.4/10) and Fjällräven (8.2/10). The leader wins in town with waterproof parkas from 150 to 320 euros, Patagonia on guarantee and repairs, Fjällräven on warmth.
What is the best parka for winter in the city?
A waterproof parka of at least 5,000 mm with taped seams that covers the top of the thighs. In our 2026 comparison, Faguo's MONTAUD at 220 euros is the best designed for cycling, and Aigle's MTD membrane parkas (166 to 340 euros) are a good alternative.
Patagonia or Fjällräven, which brand should you choose for a coat?
Patagonia (8.4/10) wins on repairs with its Ironclad Guarantee and the Worn Wear programme. Fjällräven (8.2/10) wins on warmth, with down jackets like the Singi Down Jacket at 700 euros. Both are designed for the outdoors more than the city.
How much should you budget for a good men's coat?
Between 150 and 350 euros for a parka or pea coat that will last several winters. Our 2026 comparison records 99.90 euros for the Rains Long Jacket, 150 to 320 euros at Faguo, 220 to 370 euros for an Armor-Lux pea coat and 600 to 700 euros for the down jackets of Patagonia and Fjällräven.
Puffer or parka, which is better for the city?
A waterproof parka suits a rainy climate better, because rain flattens the down of a puffer. The down jacket takes the lead in dry, severe cold. Our guide parka, puffer or wool coat compares both by temperature and weather.
Which French men's coat brand should you choose?
Faguo, founded in Nantes, tops our 2026 comparison with 8.6/10. Armor-Lux (7.9/10) offers wool pea coats partly made in France, and Aigle (7.7/10), founded in 1853, waterproof parkas with its MTD membrane.
